Two formulas: the item money and the parcel money

Hipobuy prints one formula per order type; laid on top of each other they differ by exactly one term, the product cost, which a forwarding order pays to someone else.

The agent formula, term by term

Hipobuy's Service and Fees page starts with a promise: no agent service fee. Its total adds three things, item cost, international shipping and customs charges, while value-added services stay optional extras.

  • Item cost is the product price plus the seller's domestic shipping to the Hipobuy warehouse. You pay it when you order.
  • International shipping depends on weight, shipping method and destination. You pay it when you submit the parcel.
  • Customs charges are a declaration cost per parcel. Hipobuy puts it at RMB 10.00 in general and lets the shipping method vary it.

Because the last two are charged per parcel, several agent orders combined into one parcel pay one customs line between them.

The forwarding formula, and the term that leaves

The forwarding total is international shipping plus the customs clearance fee. The item is not missing from your costs; it is missing from Hipobuy's bill, because you or the sender paid the seller before the parcel was posted.

That makes the two totals equal for the same listed item, give or take what the seller charges you directly versus through Hipobuy. The parcel half is identical: same estimator, same lines, same customs line.

The exception to watch is the courier. If the seller or sender did not prepay the domestic delivery and the warehouse pays it on arrival, Hipobuy takes that fee from your balance without asking. It is the only item-side cost that can still land on your Hipobuy account.

Three names for one customs line

Hipobuy's pages call the per-parcel customs item three different things. The order-type article writes Customs Clearance Fee in both formulas. The Service and Fees page writes customs charges in its formula and customs declaration cost when it gives the RMB 10.00 figure.

They are the same line. It is charged once per parcel, at submission, whatever mixture of agent and forwarded goods the parcel holds, and the figure depends on the shipping method you pick. Duties and taxes in your own country are a separate matter that Hipobuy's pages leave to the recipient's customs rules.

If you see a different amount in the parcel checkout, trust the checkout: the RMB 10.00 figure is described as general, not fixed.

Exchange rate and how you pay

Hipobuy prices everything in yuan. If you pay in dollars, euros or pounds, the site converts at its own displayed rate. Independently measured in October 2026, that displayed rate sat about 16 per cent away from the mid-market rate. Treat that as a dated observation, not a policy.

Here the order types really differ. In an agent order the item price, the seller's shipping and the parcel all pass through that conversion. In a forwarding order only the shipping and customs lines do; the item money goes to the seller by whatever route your own account uses.

PayPal adds its own fee when you top up: Hipobuy's PayPal page gives 5% plus $0.37, while another Hipobuy page gives 4.4% plus $0.30. Card top-ups accept Visa, Mastercard and Discover.

Optional charges that apply to either order

A few charges sit outside both formulas and apply whichever order the goods came from:

  • Extra detailed photos at 1 CNY each, for angles or measurements beyond the usual three standard photos.
  • A Rehearsal Parcel at 20 CNY per parcel, for which the warehouse weighs a packed parcel before you buy its shipping.
  • For agent orders only, the return fee when you send something back for your own reasons: both shipping legs plus RMB 5.

The Customized Order adds one more: a buyer search that, according to the form, is not refunded if you decline what the buyer finds. The amount is not on the public form text, so ask before you submit one.

Where forwarding can cost more than it looks

The forwarding formula is shorter, but the forwarding terms add costs that a formula cannot show. A collect-on-delivery courier fee comes out of your balance. Sending a faulty item back to the seller is something Hipobuy will do, but it does not publish the price. Missing pieces are your loss unless Hipobuy caused it.

The quietest cost is a parcel that cannot be matched. If the tracking number you entered is wrong or missing, the parcel becomes an abnormal package with 30 days to be claimed, and because Hipobuy cannot tell whose it is, it sends no reminder.

None of this makes forwarding a bad choice. It makes it a choice for buyers who already know the seller, prepay the courier, and type the tracking number twice.
